This morning, Ken (王慶剛), a former student who now is a senior at National Chengchi University double-majoring in journalism and English, paid me a visit. He told me he had three pieces of big news to share. The first one is he has been selected as one of the five delegates of Taiwan to participate in the Strait Talk Symposium, which will be held at Berkeley University from April 2 to 10. To be selected, he had to answer some questions on the application form and be interviewed by someone at Berkeley through Skype. Good for him! During the symposium, the five delegates from Taiwan will talk face-to-face with the five delegates from mainland China and five from the USA. (more…)

The 10th Day of the Chinese New Year
Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010(The photos were taken and put on this entry on Feb. 28.)
The 10th Day of the Chinese New Year. I saw both my classes today and gave each student a bookmark I made, with the song “The Rose” and the poem “The Oak.” It seems that today’s lesson was taken from nature. “The Rose” conveyed the idea that everyone is the seed of love, or rather, the seed of anything. I told Class 209 that even if they didn’t feel love, they can start to love someone. The poem “The Oak” was written by Alfred Tennyson, a famous English poet. Chris introduced it to me the other day and I fell for it right away. The poem goes like this: (more…)

314 Class Reunion
Sunday, February 7th, 2010This noon I attended the class reunion of 314, who graduated last summer. Four teachers and about 20 students were present. The moment we saw each other, we hugged. In fact, I have seen most of them once or twice during the half year since they left school. However, a reunion brings everyone together, giving a feeling of family. (more…)

Christmas with My Former Students
Monday, December 28th, 2009On Christmas Day, five former students came back to school, Bubble from Class 313, Joel and Jeremy from Class 314 and Chong-hao and Gara from Class 310. I had two happy “chatting” sessions. In the bottom photos are the students with their former homeroom teachers. Gara from Class 310 stressed the importance of English, which is an important tool in college education. She even suggested that students listen to Studio Classroom together and have a discussion about the lesson in the morning study period every day. See how important English is?
