Happy Mother’s Day to all moms!
In Thursday’s English class, thirty minutes before the dismissal bell rang, I let my homeroom class watch two song videos: Anita Renfroe’s “The Mom Song,” which my dear friend Annie had introduced to me, and Il Divo’s “Mama,” both of which I’d already inserted in my blog on Wednesday. (more…)
This coming Sunday is Mother’s Day. I’d like to share with you two song videos from YouTube. The moods of the two songs are a world apart. (more…)
In today’s morning assembly, the juniors were asked to sing or recite the song “You Raise Me Up” from memory. Usually, the hostess would draw a seat number (Scream!) and then three class numbers (Scream +1!) to decide who were going on stage. To help my students avoid being an “outsider,” a word they learned yesterday in Unit 9, this morning I had Class 209 go on stage and sing in front of all the juniors. They did a lovely job! (more…)
For the recitation in the morning assembly on May 5, the juniors have to familiarize themselves with the song “You Raise Me Up” and be able to sing the first half of it from memory. Here are the lyrics of the first half, followed by three videos of this song from YouTube, one featuring Josh Groban, another Westlife with lyrics, and the other Celtic Woman :
“When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
And I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains;
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas;
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders;
You raise me up to more than I can be.” (more…)
Unit 2 “The Chain of Love” in Book 3 is a touching story. Though it’s a self-study lesson, I still had students read it in class, in the hope that they bear the idea of love in mind all their life.
First, the students sat back and read the story silently. Next, I handed out the lyrics of the song “The Chain of Love” with some words missing. Since the song was written based on the story, the students could figure out most of the missing words if they knew what the story is about. Then the students discussed in groups. Finally, they listened to the song to see if they got the right words.
The following is the song sung by Clay Walker. It’s amazing that someone could have written this song to tell such a touching story.
I have to thank Julie (陳育萱老師) and Chris (林詠梅老師) for sharing this song.
Yesterday, to wrap up Unit 9 “A Memorable Event,” I taught Class 209 a very inspiring song “Smile,” which was written by Charlie Chaplin. This is a good song to teach the students rhyming. (more…)
Yesterday I taught Class 310 the song “Mama,” sung by Il Divo, which I already taught the other two classes last week. This coming Sunday is Mother’s Day, and I’d like them to express their thanks and love to their dear mom. When I asked them to guess which sentence in the song touched me most, Derek (董德) said, “And I know you had dreams.” Bingo! Every time I came to this line, it brought a lump to my throat. I told the students that our moms had their dreams too, but that in order to take care of the family, they sacrificed. (more…)
Since I taught Class 314 a song at the beginning of the class one Friday in March, they have been looking forward to singing every Friday. So far, we have sung “If,” “When You Believe,” “Rhythm of the Rain,” ”Hero,” and “Perhaps Love.” All these songs have beautiful melody, and most of them are inspriing. Ying-zi (張盈姿) told me that when she was preparing for the 2nd-stage screening, she often hummed the song “Hero” to herself. I am glad that the song reassured and helped her, giving her more strength. This morning, as promised yesterday, I taught Class 314 the song “If.” (more…)
